Installation

iHomeServerâ„¢ for iTunes is simple to install on any of its supported platforms.  This section explains how to install iHomeServer depending on your intended use - from a normal home desktop or a brand new Windows Home Server.  If you are migrating your content to a Server, this section also covers some best practices for migration.

Note that iHomeServer can be installed onto both Windows desktops (Windows XP SP2, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1) and server Windows Operating Systems (including both variants of Microsoft's Windows Home Server (v1 and v2011) and Windows Server 2012 Essentials (inc R2)).  The functionality of iHomeServer is exactly the same across all editions, however, the presentation varies slightly between the installations.  On desktop operating systems and non Home editions of Windows Server, the iHomeServer Management Console is a dedicated application that you use to manage iHomeServer and is available from the Start Menu.   On Windows Home Server and Windows Server 2012 Essentials, the iHomeServer Management Console is also embedded within an iHomeServer tab on the Windows Home Server Dashboard/Console GUI.

Within this 'Getting Started' section, we will cover installation across all supported Operating Systems, however, to keep this user guide simple, we will subsequently show screen shots from the stand-alone (non WHS) version.  However, as above, the functionality is identical across versions.

iHomeServer runs on top of a full iTunes installation, therefore a significant part of the "Getting Started" section is dedicated to installing and configuring iTunes.
